Connect us to Claude or ChatGPT

Add this practice to the assistant you already use, and reach us without opening a form.

This site runs a small MCP server. MCP — the Model Context Protocol — is the standard both Claude and ChatGPT use to reach a tool that is not their own, and adding ours is a one-off job of about a minute. Afterwards your assistant can fill in and send one of the forms on this site for you. It reaches the same inbox either way, and we come back to you the same way.

It is worth setting up for two quite different people:

  • If you are a patient, ask your assistant about coming in and it sends the enquiry on your behalf — the same one as the appointments page.
  • If you are a dentist referring a patient, describe the referral in the conversation you are already in, rather than filling in the referral form by hand.

Neither replaces the pages themselves. It is the same two forms, offered somewhere you may already be typing.

What it can do

Connecting adds three abilities to your assistant, and nothing else:

  • get_practice_info — where we are, when we are open, and how to reach us.
  • submit_appointment_enquiry — sends an appointment enquiry, for a patient asking on their own behalf.
  • submit_patient_referral — sends us a patient referral, and we contact the patient to arrange a consultation.

It cannot read your computer, your records or your other conversations. It sends what you have told your assistant, and only when you say so.

What you need

One address, which both apps ask for:

MCP server address

https://www.nrvperio.com/mcp

There is no account to make, no password and no API key to paste. The forms behind it are the public ones on this website, so the connector is open in exactly the way they are.

Set it up on a computer. Neither app can add a custom connector from its iPhone or Android app — the setting simply is not there. Add it once on the desktop app or in a browser and it appears on your phone under the same account, ready to use from there.

Both apps move their menus around from release to release. If a setting is not quite where this page says, look for Connectors or Apps in the app's settings — the steps themselves have not changed.

Claude

Every Claude plan allows at least one custom connector. The desktop app and claude.ai share one set of settings, so adding it in either adds it to both, on every device you are signed in on.

Add this practice to Claude

That opens Claude's connector screen with the name and address already filled in, and you press Add. If the screen opens empty, or the option is missing, your account does not have custom connectors — the steps below are the same job done by hand, and the appointments and referral forms are open to everyone regardless.

Add the connector by hand

  1. Open Claude and go to Settings, then Connectors.
  2. Click Add custom connector. On a Team or Enterprise plan it is added once for the whole workspace instead, under Organization settings → Connectors → Add → Custom, and only an owner can do it.
  3. Name it New River Valley Periodontics & Implants and paste the address above into the URL field.
  4. Leave Advanced settings alone. There are no credentials to enter.
  5. Click Add. It should connect straight away and list the three tools above. If your practice is on a Team or Enterprise plan, everyone else then presses Connect beside it in their own settings.

Turn it on in a conversation

Open the + menu at the bottom of the message box, choose Connectors, and switch this practice on. It stays on for that conversation.

ChatGPT

Custom connectors in ChatGPT sit behind developer mode, which needs a paid plan and is not offered on the free one. On a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace an administrator has to allow custom connectors before anyone can add one. If Developer mode is not in your settings at all, that is the reason; the two forms on this site stay open to everyone either way.

Turn on developer mode

  1. Open ChatGPT — the desktop app or the browser; they share the same settings.
  2. Go to Settings, then Apps & Connectors (called Connectors in older builds), then Advanced settings.
  3. Turn on Developer mode.

Create the connector

  1. Back on the Connectors screen, click Create.
  2. Name it New River Valley Periodontics & Implants. The description is read by the model rather than by you, so something like “Send an appointment enquiry to, or refer a patient to, a periodontal practice in Blacksburg, Virginia” helps it pick the right moment to use it.
  3. Paste the address above into MCP server URL.
  4. For Authentication, choose No authentication.
  5. Confirm the trust prompt if one appears, and click Create.

Turn it on in a chat

In a new chat, open the tools menu beside the message box, find the connector under Developer mode, and tick it.

What to ask for

Once the connector is on, say what you want in your own words. Both apps show you what they are about to send and wait for you to allow it, and both will ask for anything required that you have not given them.

As a patient

Ask New River Valley Periodontics & Implants whether they can see me about receding gums. I am Ada Lovelace, ada@example.com, (540) 000 0000.

That sends an enquiry, not a booking. Someone at the practice reads it and comes back to you to arrange a time.

As a referring dentist

Refer Ada Lovelace to New River Valley Periodontics & Implants for recession at #6 and #7. Her number is (540) 000 0000. I am Dr Grace Hopper.

We contact the patient to arrange the consultation and report back to you afterwards, exactly as we do with a referral sent from the website.

Before you send anything

  • It arrives as an email to the practice, exactly as it does from the website. We read it Monday to Thursday, 8:00am – 5:00pm; nobody reads it outside those hours.
  • Pain, swelling, bleeding that will not stop, or an injury: call us on (540) 951 4848 instead. A form is the wrong instrument for that, and a well-behaved assistant will tell you the same.
  • Read what your assistant wrote before you let it send. It is told never to invent a name, a number or a history to satisfy a required field, and it will ask you instead — but what goes out has your name on it.
  • Sending from the referral page also downloads a PDF copy for the referring dentist's records. A referral sent through an assistant does not, so use the page when you need the copy.
  • Claude and ChatGPT are outside services, with no agreement with this practice. Treat a chat window as you would any other, and keep personal and clinical detail to what the form actually needs.

If it will not connect

  • Check the address is https, and that nothing has been added to the end of it.
  • A local or command-line MCP server cannot be used here; both apps reach ours over the internet.
  • If the connector appears but lists no tools, remove it and add it again — both apps hold on to the tool list they first saw.
  • Anything else, call (540) 951 4848 or email info@newriverperio.com and we will help you get it working.
